Camping and Campfires: Keep Life Simple

Why Camping?

Top Ten Reasons to Go Camping Tik Tok
"It's a good life." Sitting at the fire, DC will remind me of this now and again.  Which is needed, especially now.  The end of the school year is upon us, and I have never been more overwhelmed.  Kids are tired, teachers are tired, the school is tired.  Sometimes, something simple is needed to remember how good life is.
Picture
Picture
So when DC said let's go camping, there was no hesitation.   Memorial day weekend, only one night open.  Bishop Lake State Park.

We took it.
Bishop Lake Tik Tok
Which people will cringe at.  Why go camping for just one night?  It's so much work.
By keeping things simple, one night of camping is a quick getaway and far cheaper than a hotel.
Picture
You need a tent.
You need a sleeping bag.
(You need an air mattress if you like your body)
Some firewood (and Firestarter if you aren't from the UP where starting fires comes naturally.)
(Get started or add to your gear HERE)
Picture
That's it.  Sure, you can bring food.  But if you're a novice camper and you just want to get away, bring some hotdogs and chips.  You'll be fine.
Picture
Picture
After we set up, DC sits by the fire to read and I walk.  We really love Bishop Lake State Park.  Tucked away on the outskirts of the city, it has everything you need without needing to go far.  While there is a more modern campground, we prefer the secluded sites on Murray Lake, or Appleton during the week when Murray is closed.
Picture
Picture
There's the beach, and books, and a little bit of something for everyone.  A few hours of walking, hiking, and reading before sitting at the campfire.
Night falls and there's a stillness camping you don't get everywhere.  There's this moment in which the campground settles in for the night and the fire becomes the only light.
(This fire is a little bit more on the expert side.  DC drilled a hole to create a chimney effect.  Coloring is natural!)
Picture

Then at breakfast the next morning, (which does just taste better over fire) listening to the campground the wildlife around us, an appreciation for just being present was clear.

"Camping is good for the soul".  DC's comment at the end of the trip and landed just when I needed it most.

How often do we think about finding a little peace in our soul?  How often do we jump on last minute plans to get away from it all and just be.
We love tent camping.  And as we press on to the end of the year, a few moments of peace are worth booking a one night quick trip.  So find your campsite, pull up next to the fire, and find a little bit of peace when you need it the most.
Cheers to getting to the end of the year!

Side Note: These tumblers are pretty amazing.  The ice from the night before was still there in the morning!  They are on our site HERE.  (Remember, we are Amazon affiliates because we're teachers and everything helps us continue to travel and teach.  We appreciate you!)

Travel Tip:  Make the Most of Memorial Day

Why Memorial Day?

Clicking the buttons will take you to our Tik Tok to learn  more about places to travel for Memorial Day!
The beginning of summer.  Memorial day marks the opening of backyard BBQ's, pool parties and lazy summer days.
And that's all wonderful.
But don't forget to travel and hold on to the why.
Statue Of Liberty

America's Backstory

Picture
Memorial Day is when we honor those that have defended America in our military and have lost their lives for it.  Both of us have strong respect for those that have served our country and the history that comes with it.
River Raisin National Battlefield
When we were in England, it was eye opening to read about the Revolutionary War from the British lens.  The information read as a loss of brotherhood.  We sometimes forget Memorial Day remembers those who fought first for our country and the freedoms we have today.

Find Some Way to See History

Picture
This Memorial Day, we're encouraging you to find some way to learn about the history of those who came before us.  This summer, make a plan to learn.  There are amazing places across our country to see.
Historic North Bridge
If you're not sure where to go, check out some of the places we've visited, both recently and in the past.  Each one ties to a point in our history when America fought to defend herself, and honors  the loss of those who bravely took on her fight.

Teaching Travel:  Why you should get a Passport for yourself...and your classroom.

Forty-Two Percent

Forty-two percent is currently the estimated number of American's that own a Passport.
That's less than half.

Meaning over half the population of America has never been outside of the country.

Read that twice.
Picture
Picture
In a world in which viewpoints create animosity, and opinions sometimes become fact, it's important to understand that leaving the country changes your perspective.

But if you never go...how do you know anything different?
You need to see other countries.

They're different.

They're suppose to be.

Picture
We teach how to travel because as teachers, we want those around us to continue to learn and grow.  Every experience is a chance to learn more about who you are as well as how you view the world around you.

Which, in today's world, is extremely important.

We want this for you.  We want this for our students.  We want this for your students.

On your to do list...

If you do not have a passport, it's time to get one.  Prioritize, skip a few coffees, save up and get the document that allows you to leave and return to your country.  If you don't know how to get one:  CLICK HERE.  (Recommended: a Passport Holder - Passports are documents that can be scanned without you realizing it).

Teachers - Teach students about Passports

We are charged with teaching our students to understand the world around them.  If they never learn HOW to see the world, we've missed our mark as educators.  The number of passports will become less, meaning our perspective of the world will become smaller and smaller.

The Reading Passport

Picture
Teachers, we invite you to pause on reading logs during some portion of your year.

We're asking you to consider "Reading Passports."
We've created a Reading Passport to connect two ideas:

Books will take you away from where you are, Passports take you away to where you want to go.
Click FOr the Reading Passport
The Reading Passport has been used in DC's room.  Only one of his students had one or understood what passports in general were used for. (Click the button for more information and the editable document.  We will be updating this year before March with new pictures and places, so you can use it multiple times.)
We are going to come back to this theme a few times.

You get one life.  There is only one world.

Getting your passport is priority number one for traveling across the globe.

Once you do, in the words of Dr. Suess...

Hawk's Nest State Park, West Virginia

Take the Road Less Traveled...

Tik Tok Hawk's Nest
We receive no compensation for reviewing Hawk's Nest State Park.

Sometimes, when you're traveling with an open mind and a little bit of curiosity, some of the best finds end up finding you.
Picture
We saw the sign for Hawk's Nest State Park while trying to find the road for our Airbnb.  Having been on the road for a few hours, with still travel time ahead of us, we decided to pull over and take a look.
Picture
The views were incredible.  The small lookout built into the side of the mountain overlooked the New River below.  The view spread out before us in all directions, giving you a "Hawk's Eye" advantage point of the valley below.  (Even though it's name for the bird's in the area, my first thought was the viewpoint!)  Across the street was a shop and a park, and we spent some time wandering around.  It was a great little find...

until we found so much more.
Picture

Miles to see and do

It wasn't until we were on our New River Gorge Bridge Walk when the guide pointed out Hawk's Nest to the group.  We were a little surprised, as we hadn't seen the bridge when we had made our stop.  We figured we just hadn't looked close enough and probably missed it.

Until we learned there were miles to hike, a lodge, tours, and much more.

We definitely had missed something.
Picture
Early Sunday morning in April, we found the Lodge and Restaurant.  The park had a few visitors already, and the souvenir shop was open.  We took a walk to the lookout and saw what we had missed.  Where the smaller location opened up to the lower half of the river, we now had a true view of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.  The river lay out before us in both directions, and the bridge sat at the top of the valley, just within our view, connecting to halves of West Virginia.
Picture
It's a spectacular find.  As always, traveling on limited time, we couldn't do everything we wanted.  We were able to walk along the paths and see some of the area, and of course make a stop in the shop to pick up a reminder to return.  We could have spent our entire morning there.
(The two pictures are similar, but in the cloudy April morning, we were doing our best to capture the New River Gorge Bridge just at the top of the valley!)
Picture
Thank you, West Virginia, for preserving this land since 1935!  We didn't know our travels from Michigan would take us here, but we are so glad we didn't miss it!

Travel Tip: Write History

We are not paid to recommend Sue or the Chicago Field Museum

You never know where your story will take you...

Picture
Quick Tip Today!

As spring begins to bring dreams of summer...find something unique to get you there.  Find something that inspires you.  Find something that makes you want to learn more.
Picture
Meet Sue!  Click the Tik Tok above (or here) to learn more about her and her history.

And then write it down.  If there's one thing you'll see consistently as we continue to share, we are going to consistently ask you to write about your adventures.

Get a Journal.

The pages write themselves...
Picture
Like it? Get it here
That's it.  That's the recommended advice you're going to see over and over so it clicks.

WRITE IT DOWN.

Writing down what you saw, what you learned, why you went doesn't seem to matter in the moment.  Until you open up your journal one day and realize that you've created your own history.

It may not be worth as much as Sue, and hopefully the FBI is not involved.  But your history is just as important as Sue's.

Because your history can only be written by you.

Traveling Tip Tuesday:  Book the Bus Tour

Bus Tours...

Tik Tok Bus Tour
Traveling by bus is a matter of opinion.  For today's Traveling Tip, we recommend booking one bus tour for a day trip when you want to get the most out of your traveling experience.
Picture

8 days of travel...take one bus tour

Last summer, we were in England.  We researched and planned our days, and found that in order to save time and see more, one of our days would be best using a bus tour.

We booked our tour for Windsor Castle, Roman Baths, and Stonehenge.
Click below!
Roman Baths
Bath England
Stonehenge
It was COMPLETELY worth it
Picture
Picture
To start, we want to be clear, the actual bus tour had it's moments.  It was really disorganized getting buses to depart, our tour guide was hard to understand with the traveling, and the trip changed as we went.  The bus was comfortable and the ride easy.

When you're traveling on a budget, you learn to go with the flow, and it ended up being better.
We traveled to Windsor, England first.  (Where I was 40 years old and connected that Windsor, Canada was connected to Windsor, England.  Sooo, there's that)

We did the self-guided tour and had plenty of time to see what we needed.  We also had the London Pass (highly recommend), which ended up getting us into the Castle before the rest of the tour group.  With the extra time, we were able to be outside the walls when the Changing of the Guard parade took place.
Picture
We were in England three weeks before Queen Elizabeth's passing.
Picture
We were highly impressed with the patriotism of the English.  The flooded the streets to watch the Changing of the Guard in Windsor.
Don't worry.....we were ready for the change.

Quick Travel Tip:  PACK A LUNCH.  I bought this travel insulated lunchbox.  We took a trip to the grocery store the day before and purchased meats and cheeses, crackers, yogurt and snacks. Packing a lunch saves money, as well as allows you to see more and not get caught rushing to eat.  This lunch box traveled easy and carried more than enough for both of us.

Bath was an incredible place of history.  From those on the tour group, we were the only two to enter the Roman Baths.
As both of us have been to Italy, it was striking to see Roman Architecture in the middle of the English countryside.  We agreed it was a place to return too, as the the Baths were what we went for and took up our time.  (Don't worry, the water was safe to drink!)
Picture
Picture
Back on the bus and we were headed to Stonehenge.

A World Heritage Site, the stones remain a mystery to this day.  The tour made getting to the site easy, as we boarded a bus and drove past those walking out to the site.

While we may not understand why they exists, the picture taking is epic.  Another perk of the tour, our guide knew the best spots to get photos and encouraged us to capture the moments.
Picture
Taking a bus tour in worth your time and investment.  Side Tip:  Remember cash on tours.  In a time that no one carries cash, it goes a little farther to remember the people that go out of your way to make your trip enjoyable.

Traveling?  Book the bus tour.  It's worth the memories.
