What are you waiting for?

It's the final countdown.  A few more days and the year 2023 will come to an end.  As we reflect on our year, we ask you to take a moment to reflect on yours.

Every year you get 365 days to take on the world.  Whether close to home or far off adventures, each day, each moment matters.

What did you do this year?

January:  Our first post was our trip to Holland.  Who says beaches are only for the summer?

February was a trip to see family and hike in North Carolina.

March was hockey close to home.
Our First Tik Tok in Holland!
April took us on an adventure to West Virgina and across the New River Gorge.

May kicked off camping season!  One of our favorite activities and budget friendly travel.

June took us to Milwaukee to see the Brewers play baseball!  We added the Pabst Tour and an American Field Tour this year.

July was so busy.  Various trips in different directions.  Kentucky to see the Ark, North Carolina, camping.  We made the most of summer.

August took us across the pond to Ireland and Scotland!

September, we headed south to see friends, while also seeing Mammoth Cave and Abe Lincoln's birthplace. (Which have free and reduced rates!)
October and November consisted of trips to the Upper Peninsula, trying to capture all of the transition from fall to winter.

December was spent exploring the wonders of Christmas locally, with a trip to Crossroads Village just outside of Flint.

Still Time to Travel for a Little Christmas Magic!

Tis' the Season for Magic!

We do not get compensated for recommending Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad.

There's still time.  As the days move quickly and Christmas approaches it can be easy to forget to find the magical moments that Christmas provides.
We took advantage of the season and took a quick travel trip to Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad just outside of Flint, Michigan.  We had never been, and the promise of winter traditions with magical lights drew us.
Picture
Picture
We were not disappointed.  Hosted by Genesse County Parks, the entire trip is affordable and easy to navigate.  We had a 6:40 train departure which gave us time to explore the village.
The village consists of historical buildings from towns across Michigan.  Each one holds a piece of history and has been redone to meet the needs of visitors.  We wandered through shops, homes, found the blacksmith and enjoyed watching the model train display in city hall.
Picture

The Huckleberry Railroad took us back in time on railcars from the 1800's.  The tour guide provided information on the rail as we traveled through the area, even entering the nearby town.  Along the way we were entertained with magical light displays and Christmas carols that played over the loudspeaker.
There's a carousal, designated the fastest in Michigan, and a Ferris wheel that was surprisingly fast.  (And perhaps caused a little motion sickness for one in our party.)  For $1.50, the entertainment was well worth the price.
Picture
Picture
Last but not least, we found Santa, which is included in the price.  Both young and old still believing in the magic of Christmas got a visit and a little token to take with them.
It was a great time and well worth the visit.  Travel doesn't have to be far off destinations with big plans to be incredible.  Sometimes, the moments close to home are just as magical and worth it.

Make the most of the moments left!  If you have time, check out Crossroads Village this season.

Most of the attractions are outside, and it can get chilly walking between buildings.  We highly recommend some warm gear, and some boots.  Check out our Amazon Storefront for recommend winter gear.  We are Amazon Associates and make a small compensation from qualifying purchases so that we may continue to travel and teach about the things we love!

This is the moment to celebrate.  If you take the time to really reflect on the year, it's important to focus on the celebrations.  Every year is going to have difficult days.  Don't focus solely on those days.  Because the days that come after, the days that matter, are each and every successful day that you found the things that matter and the joy that comes from it.

Decisions in December Series #2... What Matters the Most

12/11/2023

At the end of the day...ask yourself, what decisions really matter?

Get Up and Go
Picture
It's the end of the year, which brings out the reflective nature in humans.  As one year draws to a close, another begins.  A series of questions begins to roll out from all places.

What went well this year?
What are the best memories?
What things need to change?
What could you do differently?
Picture
Through travel, the year provides a number of opportunities for reflection before the year ends.  Stepping away from the day-to-day life asks for consistent evaluation and reevaluation of the choices that are made on a daily basis.  When you take time to observe the world around you, and you get an opportunity to see the world in a variety of ways.

Which leaves the most important question for the end of the year.

What really matters in a lifetime?
Picture
It's a question that is unique to every individual.  It requires some introspection and a willingness to be open to what you really value and want most in this life.  Sure, there are so many things you can want and have.  New items flood our markets every day.  The latest and greatest fads and trends come and go.

But what are the things that really matter?
Picture
For us, it's memories.  Memories of family and friends.  Memories of time well spent on experiencing the most the world has to offer.  Carpe Diem.  Seize the day.  And then do everything we can to teach others to do the same.
Picture
Because the reality is, you can spend all of your money on things, and maybe that makes you happy.  But we want you to experience happiness that lasts.  We want you to be able to look back and life knowing you were able to spend your time with those you care about.  We want you to be able to meet people in the world that are willing to share their experiences with you, their own life stories, so that you can see that your life is a story unfolding every day, in every moment.  It's a story worth reading and rereading over and over again.
Picture
So, as the year begins to draw to a close, take time to really reflect on the things that matter.  Let go of the things in this world and grab hold of experiences and memories that will last you a lifetime.  Make a list.  Write it down.

Then make a plan.  2024 is waiting.

It's going to be incredible.

Get ready to make the most of it.

Decisions in December Series Post 1:  Expectations vs Reality

12/3/2023

What you see is not always what you get...

When traveling, you tend to see a picture of some place incredible and think "I want to be there."  A serene mountainside, a quiet lake, a pool on the end of a cliff.  Picture after picture shows you incredible views that leave you with a longing to go.

And you can't wait.  You make your plans, back your bags, and decide to go.  You're going to have a piece of that peaceful spot in the world.  You're going to take pictures and they're all going to be perfect.  You'll be able to look back and reflect on the luxurious time you had.

Great expectations.

But is it the reality?
Picture
The one where it was cold and windy, to sweaty, to chilly, all in the same hour.  Hair a mess, clothes a mess.  Yep, there are those moments.
Picture
Or the one where it rained all day.  It was cold and wet and there was just no getting a break from it.  Those were some great pictures.
Picture
And the random ones.  The ones you would never post because you don't like the way your face looks or your hair or whatever it is that you're looking at.  So many of those pictures are in albums.  Pictures no one would see because we only post our expectations.

It's slightly misleading.
Picture
We live our lives in expectations.  And as we make our way through December towards the new year, it's really a good time to stop and reflect on them.  As we approach four years post COVID, and a world that has started again, it's really the time to look at our expectations.

What are your expectation?

Who do you have expectations of?

Family?  Friends?  Co-workers?  Students?

And what expectations do you have on yourself?
Picture
Change is the only constant in this world.  And if we don't expect ourselves to change over the course of time, we are limiting ourselves to growing and learning.  However, just as you are changing, so are others.  And if we don't shift our expectations of others and ourselves, we simply become constantly disappointed.

We tend to live only in the perfect pictures.  We only see the things that we want to see.  And we miss out on the reality that, well, everything just isn't perfect.
Picture
We're not suggesting lowering your expectations.  That comes out a lot when people are asked to reflect on expectations.  The thought is you should just lower them so you aren't disappointed.

That's neither helpful nor productive.

Instead, start with you.  This December, start with the expectations you have for yourself and embrace the reality you live in.  Every picture doesn't have to be perfect.  Every day doesn't have to be perfect.  In fact, a lot of the days may be less than perfect.

That's ok.  The pictures in between the imperfect one tell the story of the reality.  The everyday.  The moments that are still amazing, and wonderful, and good.  Even if they don't meet an expectation of the perfect picture.
Picture
When we travel, we hold a lot of expectations for both ourselves and others.  We have expectations to make certain times, have what we need, and be prepared for our travels.  And then we adjust.  We embrace the reality that we are really not in control of every minute of every day.  We cannot change the outcomes of situations that come before us.  We can't change the weather, or a delayed train, or any of the other million things that could happen.  If we hold the expectation that every trip and every moment will be picture perfect and the experience of a lifetime....

We'd be constantly disappointed.

Because that's not the reality.  That's not the reality of life.  Every day holds the promise of great expectations being met, while other expectations are left unmet.  We adjust.  We regroup.  We reset.

So start off December by embracing the reality.  It may be tough.  It may not be exactly what you want.  It may be a picture you want to delete (or hide in a box in the back of the closet for those of you that use to do that)

But embrace it.  See the reality.  And set your expectation of starting 2024 off right.

We're setting our expectations high for you.  You've got this.

There's an incredible picture waiting for you.
