Passport Instructions

You need a passport.

Even if you have no plans right now to use it.

Because you never know the moment a cheap ticket comes up, or last minute plans, or a trip of a lifetime and someone says: Let's Go!

No one wants to be the person that says "I can't get out of the country."

Getting a passport sounds overwhelming, and seems like a lot, but it's the greatest investment in your life journey you will ever make.

And it starts right now.  Read all and then follow the steps below and get your passport as soon as you can.   If you already have one, you can put off renewing for a year after it expires, but be aware that over a year you have to do the new passport application again.

These are instructions for the United States!  Please see your countries instructions.  Picture, documentation of citizenship, and payment are standard)

Simple passport directions (see below for detailed links and support):
a. Fill out passport form
b. Get a picture taken at an approved passport location or at the post office (make appointment)
c. Go to the post office during PASSPORT HOURS (these are specific.  You make an appointment online which makes it much easier and faster)  You can go to the county clerk and some libraries, but we suggest the post office with an appointment.
  • Take pictures (if you took them at Walgreens) and your original AND copy (back and front) of your citizen evidence.  (Birth certificate is the example.  You need the original and a back and front copy of both.)
  • Take a copy of your current ID (Driver's license)
d.  Pay post office .  This must be done by check or money order.  There are two checks.  One one for the passport, and one for the place that is going to process your order.  You have to do check or money order for your passport.  You can do cash in some places for the other.  We recommend having two checks as it's the most reliable for acceptance.

Here are all the steps and links:

First:  Download the passport application form or use a PDF writer to fill out online.  You can print and hand write it in, but it has to be in blue or black ink. (Not recommended)  Find the form here:

Passport Forms

Next:  Get your picture taken.  There are two ways to do this.  Walgreens is and example of one place that will take the picture.  They will give you two copies.  Keep them both to take with you when you submit the application.  You can also have the post office take a picture at your appointment.

Then:  Make your passport appointment.  Make copies of your ID and proof of citizenship before you go.  You also need your original copy (or a certified copy) of proof of citizenship.  (Birth Certificate is the easiest example)  See the website if you need other examples.

Passport How to Apply:  Click Documents and ID for more information.

Lastly:  Get money and go to your appointment!  You need two different checks or money orders.  (We recommend this payment.)  You'll also need to decide how much you need to pay.  If you travel across the US border from Canada, Mexico or some of the Caribbean Islands, you can use a passport card instead of bringing your entire passport.  However, you do not need a Passport Card if you want to save money.  You do need a Passport and that will get your through the same borders.
