The History of London sits on the edge of the River Thames

Picture
In the heat of August, we found our way around London.  As one of the most popular cities in the world, we quickly found landmarks well recognized.  Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and Westminster Church all found their way onto our itinerary.  However, our first stop, was the infamous London Tower.
At first glance, London Tower could seemingly be missed.  Nestled within the backdrop of London, the castle sits well below the skyscrapers of modern day London.  At some points along the street, passerby's are eye level with the walls.  It's only until you enter into London Tower you realize it's incredible size and power throughout London's history.

The location of the tower on the River Thames made it a stronghold for the British Monarchy.  The river's speed and power made crossing difficult, allowing castle defenses to hold against attacks.  The river also rises and falls with the tides, allowing the kings of the past to use drowning as a form of punishment.
The castle takes a few hours to explore.  Each of the areas has a different piece of British history.  The Crown Jewels are stored in the castle, and are open for public viewing.  Be warned, they are heavily guarded.  The bloody tower hold numerous stories of those who were imprisoned, including that of Sir Walter Raleigh, the famous explorer.

Make sure to take time to visit the extensive collections of the British Monarchy!  King Henry VII felt himself to be particularly in need of special support with his codpiece!
Touring London Tower also gives great perspective of Tower Bridge.  Designed in the modern era, it was covered in brick to match the Tower of London.  Queen Victoria did not want it to clash with her residence.

Take time to make the Tower of London your first stop when visiting.  The history of London and it's people are worth learning before venturing out into the rest of the city.  Every view, night or day, is worth it.
