Traveling the Ring Road of Iceland:  Husavik is the World's Hometown

10/29/2024

As we continue our journey around the Ring Road of Iceland, we come to Husavik, the town we knew we were going to love.

Picture
As you reach the wonderful northern side of Iceland, Husavik becomes a must see.  Made famous in the move Eurovison Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Husavik provides a warm welcome even on the coldest of days.
Located on the edge of the Artic circle, the first picture was a snap of the map.  The location setting on your phone provides documented evidence you have reached the most remote parts of the earth.  When wandering the streets and meeting people, it doesn't feel as though you're on the edge of the world.  But a quick snap says that's exactly where you are.

Considered a remote fishing village, Husavik gained popularity after being the setting for a major film starring famous actors and actresses.  The town sits on the edge of a fjord, surrounded by stunning landscapes.  The clouds rolled in and out, revealing breathtaking moments we couldn't get enough.
We made our way through the marina to the Ja Ja Ding Dong bar.  While this bar was not open during filming, it was created to share information on the Eurovision Song Contest.  We took a stroll through the museum connected to the bar and learned so many fun facts about the history of Eurovision.  It was well worth the walk and the ticket price!
We then headed around town.  Husavik is a wonderful town to walk.
We then dinner had at Naustid.  Known for it's seafood, this quaint restaurant was the perfect spot for dinner after a busy day of traveling around the Diamond Circle.

Lastly, we finished our day with tickets to the geothermal spa.  We'll share more, but this was definitely an experience worth taking.

A moment in the north or Iceland is worth everything to get there.

Traveling the Ring Road in Iceland:  Visit Akureyi, the "capital" of Northern Iceland

10/20/2024

Halfway around the ring road is the bustling city of Akureyi, a welcomed stop along the way.

As we continued our clockwise trip around the Ring Road, we left headed for the major city of the north.  Akureyi sits at the end  of Eyhafjordur, a beautiful fjord with magical sites and simmering waters.  The sun was on our side as we took a break from driving and walked the "capital" of Northern Iceland.

Akureyi is a great day stop or a place to center your travels around.  It's easily walkable with plenty of shopping and parking.  The planes fly directly through the center of the fjord to land, which is a lot of fun to watch during the day.
There are a few stops to make along the way.  We headed to the Akureyi church.  A central landmark, the church of Iceland sits above the town.   The church has beautiful stain glass and incredible design.  It's worth the stop.

If you walk just a little ways further, you'll find the Catholic Church.  This we found to be the most interesting in Iceland.  Typically in Europe, the Catholic Churches are the largest and the center of town.  In Iceland, we found the Catholic Church to be a small building on the corner.  It was quiet, peaceful, and incredibly different than most of our finds.  Well worth the stop.
We were trying to make time to our next destination, so we weren't able to make the gardens.  They are highly recommended, if you do have the time.  We choose to walk around the town and found the first of many rainbow paths in Iceland!  (We're still rocking the hiking shoes.  Click HERE for the BEST) (We are Amazon affiliates and we do make a small compensation at no cost to you on qualifying purchases.)

After a few stops for shopping we decided to head out of town and find a pull off for lunch.  Overlooking the town of Akureyi below, we were able to cook our own food and enjoy the coming and going of the town below.

We packed up and headed on our way.  We were excited.  We were headed to Husavik, our reason for heading to Northern Iceland....

Traveling the Ring Road of Iceland:  Take a side trip to Hvammstangi in Northern Iceland

Well into our campervan trip, we have arrived in the great north of Iceland.

After a night of rest and a shower, we were ready to continue our journey.  Now well into a grove, we were about to make some exciting discoveries.

At our stop, we had picked up local maps, which turned out to be a trick we continued the rest of the trip.  We had recently discovered the "Iceland Rosettes".  These symbols lead you to various spots across the island.  Rock formations, ruins, hidden waterfalls.  You just never know what you might find.  The local maps are up to date with the latest discoveries, and well worth grabbing every time you stop.
First up, the Hvammstangi region.  There you will find Hvitserkur.  This famous rock formation is formed by basalt.  It's unique formation just on the edge of the sea provides stunning photography.  It's a short hike from the car park, after driving quite a ways toward the artic.  This was also a place for some great wildlife watching, as we saw whales and seals in the sea below.

Driving back off of the peninsula, we stopped at Koluglijfur waterfall.  This was a unique stop, as the falls provided dramatic drops just a short distance off of the road.  Due to it's location, there were just a few visitors, giving you a private moment with Iceland's landscape.
Picture
A few stops for some landmarks which included a quaint viking church. The drive across the north to Akureyri takes a few hours, but the short drive up to Hvammstangi is well worth it!

Next up:  Akureyi!

Traveling the Ring Road in Iceland:  Visit the Snæfellsjökull National Park and Peninsula in a Day

Timing is everything.  There is always more to see in Iceland than what you plan.  Plan a path to keep you moving and find unepected surprises along the way.

Picture
We had made it through our first real night on a campground off the Ring Road.  A simple place with basic necessaities was all we needed while still fighting jet lag.   After falling asleep early, we were up and well on our way before 7 AM.
Picture
First up for the day, Gerðuberg Cliffs.

Located off of 54 traveling around the Snæfellsnes Peninsuala, these basalt cliffs don't immediately stand out as a place to stop.  However, as you drive towards them, their immense stature towers above the landscape around them.  The cliffs are formed from rapidly cooling from lava.
Getting back into the car, we continued west out onto the penisula towards the national park.  The drive alone was worth it.  Iceland provides us with rainbows and waterfalls as we marveled as the landscape continued to change around us.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsuala is an incredible treasure trove of stops along the coast.   As the volcanoes of Iceland in the past erupted, they shaped and sculpted an iconic landscape along the western coast.  The Western Fjords just out just to north, while the ocean lies to her south.

We found a beach with a shipwreck, a spot with ancient ruins, and a crater to hike.  Everything was withing just tens minutes or so of each other.

Next up, Svöðufoss, which was well worth the find.  Located is Hellissandur, this waterfall was a little ways off the road.  It's a fairly simple hike from the parking lot, with amazing views.  The water cascades from the rocks below, ringed by basalt columns.  There is a walking path and viewing platform, providing a little more stability for those who need it.  The waterfall is stunning, even on a cloudy day.
After a wonderful day of trekking around the peninsuala, Iceland rewarded us with stunning views of Kirkjufellsfossar.  Famous for it's peak in the background, this spot has stunning 180 degree views.  The waterfall is located on private property, so ensure you respect the signs and land.
Picture
Exhausted, we found another campground for the night.  After four days of straight travel, we were in desperate need of a hot shower and some sleep.  This campsite provided a hot tub, showers, and even a private room if you needed.  We welcomed the respite and tucked in for the night, eagerly anticipating the days before us.  We were about to head into Northern Iceland.
